Support Pou Soley Leve Food Pantry Message-ID: Dear WADabo Family, As we are all watching the events unfold in Haiti, one of the most pressing questions is: How can I really help? Although it is critical to give in any way we can, it is hard to know with large, international organizations how your donations are spent and how people on the ground in Haiti are benefited. One small scale, local option is being organized in part by our WADaBo friend, Selena Rhine, who was in Haiti during the earthquake. Upon her return to the states, Selena is running a benefit campaign for a food pantryin Port-au-Prince where she spent time while in Haiti. Called "Pou Soley Leve", this organization provided reduced priced meals to over 1000 people per day, from four sites throughout Cite Soleil (a very poor area of the city) before the earthquake. Amazingly, the organization still has access to a site that is partially operational and can be up and running again with our help. All the information for donations is below, along with Selena's contact info and details on an event being hosted in NYC. Be well and pray hard, Darya www.pousoleilleve.org From: selena rhine Subject: Haiti Fundraiser Date: Sunday, January 24, 2010, 8:53 PM Dear Friends and Family, As many of you know, I was in Haiti during the Earthquake last week. I am writing this to introduce Jean Yvon Kernizan, the man whose home I was a guest in and one of the small heroes of this epic disaster. I was at his dinner table when the earthquake hit and spent the next 48 hours with him, as we responded the best we knew how in the face of unspeakable circumstances. Within 10 minutes of the quake, Yvon opened the doors of his courtyard to injured and scared neighbors, and immediately responded with integrity, care, and even humor. His family cooked rice to feed everyone, and he tended to serious wounds with basic household first aid supplies. The second evening, as hundreds of people began running up the hill to avoid the rumored tsunami, Yvon stepped into the street and helped the panicking crowd assess danger and eventually calm down. I was moved by the experience of watching Yvon at work. I could see clearly why he is considered a leader among his people, as he cares, he acts quickly, and he treats people with utmost dignity. Yvon founded and directs, with his wife Beverly, a small grassroots organization called "Pou Soley Leve" that, before the earthquake, provided reduced priced meals to over 1000 people each day, from four sites throughout Cite Soleil. Yvon is now returning to Haiti to revive this hot food program, but will serve from his home that is miraculously still standing within a neighborhood of devastation. Many of you have asked how you can help the Haitian people in a meaningful and direct way. I have chosen to help Yvon get this program running, rather than to donate to an international organization where a large portion of my money will go to administrative costs. In addition, I want someone on the ground who engages with this strong, but traumatized population, with dignity and respect. At this time, every dollar to "Pou Soley Leve" will translate into a simple, prepared Haitian meal to the people of Debussy, Turgeau, and Canape Vert, neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince hit hard by the earthquake but not central to the news coverage. Thank you all for your amazing support this last week. It has helped me tremendously, and has allowed me to figure out where to put my own efforts. Let?s carry it forward and make something tangible happen, even when the cameras are off and the attention dies down. In Gratitude, Selena PS- please see our FB page and event this Thursday in NY. [image: pou soley leve logo] Hot Food Initiative Several days after the earthquake, many of the Haitian people continue to be without food, water and essential medical care. We have all heard the stories - medical supplies and food stockpiled at the airport, millions of dollars being donated to organizations with high administrative costs. Haiti has a long history of international aid never reaching the people, and unfortunately this time may be no different. The generosity of Americans has been unprecedented, but many Americans are looking for a trusted grassroots organization where donations will directly reach the Haitian people. Pou Soley Leve provides this opportunity. A donation to Pou Soley Leve - www.pousoleilleve.orggoes only to providing cooked meals to Haitians in need - no distribution problems, no governmental interference, and small overhead- only salaries for the Haitians preparing the meals. *Pou Soley Leve* Hot Food Kitchen Pou Soley Leve is a grassroots organization in Haiti that has provided hot meals to Haitians in Cite Soleil, Port-au-Prince since 2004. Pou Soleil Leve was founded by Jean Yvon Kernizan and Beverly Sanon. Yvon and Beverly both worked in New York City for over 25 years, and then returned to Port-au-Prince to engage in community work. After evacuating post-earthquake, Yvon and Beverly now return to Haiti to revive the organization's meal program, this time out of Yvon's home in Port-au-Prince. They are in a unique position to provide food to the people. As an established community organization, Pou Soley Leve will be able to access raw food distribution from international aid groups. As locals, Yvon and Beverly can tap into Haitian food markets as they emerge again. And because the home's kitchen is still standing, they can cook the food - raw ingredients will be useless for the majority of Port-au-Prince residents whose homes have been destroyed. Tickets are $10, all ages. All proceeds to Partners in Health (working in Haiti for over 20 years) HERE FOR HAITI will include performances by: What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?, Sarah Rabdau, Kristen Miller, HUM, Dan King, an African drum ensemble, dancers, and other special guests (more info below). Hosted by Chloe Erdmann and U.U. Minister, Steve Wilson. Location: Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, 10 Church St., Gloucester, MA Contact: Brian King, 978-853-6165 hewasacloud@hotmail.com Mark LaPointe, Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, PR melapointe@comcast.net In July of 2006, Chloe Erdmann visited Port-Au-Prince and Jacmel, Haiti, with a group of dancers led by choreographer, Jean Appolon and musician, Juju, (both from Haiti.) The U.S. visitors were welcomed into the community and participated in rituals, including Jean?s initiation ceremony as a Vodou Priest, and a pilgrimage to Saut d'Eau waterfall in Ville Bonheur. Chloe fondly remembers the experience, ?The emphasis on community sharing, helping and healing was palpable and contagious. And the dancing! I really don't know how, but all ages danced during these rituals for days--and I mean that quite literally. It was nothing short of amazing. My friends and I would collapse at the end of the day and be dazzled by the idea that people were still dancing and would be up earlier than we would the following morning and at it again. If dancing is any measure of joy in the soul, they have it to overflowing.? Despite abominable conditions in health care, education, and access to clean water, Chloe was astounded by the unshakeable spirit, pride and generosity in which she was surrounded. ?There was an instance when I truly witnessed how desperate the situation was concerning health care. A rainstorm had flooded the concrete channels on either side of the road and a motorcyclist had skidded off the side and broken his leg. A woman passing by had managed to get him in the back of her station wagon and was looking for any kind of medical attention in the area. Two Haitian pilgrim/hitchhikers we had picked up in our truck gave their towels to help stop the bleeding on the way to the closest medical facility (an hour away.) Giving up towels may seem like nothing to us, but I later found out that those were their towels for the year. This is only one story, but it is one that haunts me when I imagine the scale of damage done to such a beautiful country by this earthquake. If a towel can help, every bit helps, and we need to help our neighbors much as we can!? Chloe met Brian King first as fan of his band, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? Through her friendship with Brian, she fell in love with Gloucester, spending the Summer of 2008 on Cape Ann, before moving to Scotland to earn her PhD in Comparative Religion and Theology. She happened to be back in Massachusetts when the earthquake hit, and immediately she and Brian approached the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church about creating a benefit. The church board was eager to sponsor the event. Regarding the benefit, Brian says, ?I strongly believe that when tragedies happen in places that are out of our reach, many feel powerless to help. Coming together where we are, HERE, helps strengthen our energy, vision and ability to make a difference. It pulls us out of isolation, to join in effort and voice. We have the power to help right HERE by raising funds that will go where they are needed most.? Chloe also spoke about seeing Partners in Health in Action. ?When I saw the hospital that Partner In Health supports, it was one of the most hopeful sights there concerning the medical situation. Paul Farmer knows Haiti, Haitians, and the situation intimately. PIH comes highly recommended by the group I visited Haiti with- both the Haitians and the Americans - and I feel confident to donate the proceeds to their good work.? Brian has pulled together great talent from Gloucester and Boston for HERE FOR HAITI. Boston singer-songwriter, pianist, Sarah Rabdau was a finalist in WBCN Rock-n-Roll Rumble last year. Her latest video, ?Autumn Spills? is getting rotation on BRAVO. Brian?s own band, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? sold out their CD release party at the Gloucester Stage Company, and the band keeps getting bigger. They will be joined by the newly added back-up singers, The Furies, which bring Fox?s original songs to new heights. Mr. Fox will also be joined by songwriter and cellist, Kristen Miller, who will also offer her own set of Middle Eastern infused compositions, as well as the best cover of Johnny Cash?s ?Ring of Fire? ever heard. Local music staple Dan King will open the night with his rootsy sound that is known to turn any audience into a family. Local songwriter and artist, Deb Hardy will perform with her vocal group, HUM. The night will also feature an African Drum ensemble and both traditional and contemporary dance. A speaker from Partners in Health will explain exactly where and how funds will be used. ?For ten dollars you?re going to experience a great night,? Brian King promises. ?And you?re going to be glad that you?re HERE FOR HAITI.? Please, contact Brian King hewasacloud@hotmail.com for high-resolution pictures of the Saut d'Eau Waterfall taken by Chloe, Chloe in Haiti, and images of the performers. Amadou Lamine Tour? comes from a long line of griots, a caste of musicians and oral historians among the Wolof people of Senegal. Born into a family of griot percussionists, masters of the sabar drum, Lamine has been drumming since the age of four. Growing up in Kaolack, he received his early training as part of his family's drum troupe, performing regularly at weddings, baptisms, and neighborhood dance parties. In 1986, Lamine moved to Dakar, where there would be more opportunities to exploit his talents in the burgeoning popular music style known as mbalax. 1991 marked the beginning of Lamine Tour?'s career as a percussionist in the modern music scene, when he formed his first group, Xiis. After playing with Keur Gi, Diaspora, the Ballet Ousmane Ciss? and the Orchestre Nationale, Lamine Tour? joined mbalax star Mapenda Seck's band in 1995, with whom he made his commercial recording debut, Jamilou. Please reply to this email if you plan to attend the audition (even if you have already expressed an interest), and include any time constraints so I can schedule you between 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. on June 9th. Copies of the script are available; I'll email one to you if you ask. Also, I want to cast the net wide for this production -- so please, pass this notice on to those who you think might be interested in taking part. We are especially looking for musicians and dancers with experience in Afro-Carribean forms (they should also be comfortable with, or at least interested in, doing some acting as well). I'm still in the process of finding a musical director, choreographer, and visual artists to collaborate with, so if you know anyone (again, with expertise in Afro-Caribbean, especially Haitian, dance, music, or visual art), send them my way. Thanks friends! Megan AUDITION NOTICE Underground Railway Theater and Boston Playwrights? Theatre announce an additional audition date for their February 10 ? March 12, 2011 co-production of "Ti-Jean and His Brothers" by Nobel Prize-winning Caribbean playwright Derek Walcott. The play will be performed by an ensemble portraying multiple characters including humans, animals, and devils. We seek versatile performers comfortable with poetic language and, ideally, familiar with Afro-Caribbean music and dance. Roles are available for both AEA and non-Equity performers. The script is available for perusal during office hours at StageSource (88 Tremont St., Boston) and at Central Square Theater (450 Mass. Ave., Cambridge ? call in advance to Alison Klejna, Manager of Artistic Operations, at 617-576-9278 x209). Call-back auditions are BY INVITATION and BY APPOINTMENT at Central Square Theater (450 Mass Ave., Cambridge) on Wednesday, June 9th, from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Interested performers should email a headshot/resume and preferred audition times to director Megan Sandberg-Zakian at megansz@gmail.com. You will be contacted within 48 hours. Please prepare one monologue of up to 2 minutes (not from ?Ti-Jean?; best if it is from another poetic or epic text, such as Shakespeare, Walcott, Fornes, Lorca, Soyinka, etc.). You will also be asked to read from the ?Ti-Jean? script. An electronic copy of the script will be available in advance. If you play an instrument, sing, or have dance experience, please come prepared to demonstrate (and/or provide us with a link to video/audio of a performance prior to the audition). Underground Railway Theater Artistic Director Debra Wise, Boston Playwrights? Theatre Artistic Director Kate Snodgrass, and director Megan Sandberg-Zakian will attend the auditions. Underground Railway Theater and Boston Playwrights? Theatre operate under the NEAT Agreement with Actors? Equity Association. No housing is available.
