1 - Thursday, April 26 at 5pm - Bomba, Vejigante y Baquine:
A Celebration of the African Cultural and Religious Traditions of Loiza
Aldea, Puerto Rico.
Live Bomba dance will be performed as part of a multi-media exhibit
including video, photographs, and poetry readings celebrating Loiza Aldea's
African heritage - Maria Cristina Vlassidis-Burgoa's Master's Thesis
Installation. The presentation will include the building of altars in the
Espiritismo tradition and a representation of the Baquine ritual with songs,
prayers, dance and games. As is traditional, food and libations will be
plentiful! We hope you can join us in celebrating Puerto Rico's African

A documentary by Joan Frosch & Alla Kovgan.
"The film is a knockout!" - The Village Voice. Stunning choreography and
riveting stories of nine African choreographers unveil soul-shaking
responses to the beauty and tragedy of 21st century Africa. Tickets are

In the Spirit of Rara! Festival Dances of Haiti
4th Semi-Annual Weekend Workshop with Jean Appolon
A fundraising event for the youth of Haiti.
Come and celebrate the season of Rara in Haitian style! Each workshop
includes: discussion / Q&A session and reading materials about featured
dances, Rara traditions, and Haitian culture. Dance instruction features:
Horton/Dunham warm up, Haitian dance technique, and original
choreography. Geared
towards advanced beginner to intermediate level dancers, all are welcome.
Live accompaniment by Haitian drum masters: JouJou, Marceil, TiCharles, and
other talented artists!
A portion of the proceeds from this will go directly to dance programs for
disadvantaged youth in Haiti .
$70 for entire workshop / $40 for single class. Pre-registration is required
