LAMBARENA
Val Caniparoli's joyous Lambarena is a classical ballet layered with
movement from authentic African dance, a "fusion," one critic recently
wrote, "not bested to date by any choreographer." Created for San
Francisco Ballet in 1995, Lambarena is performed to a score of the
same name that combines traditional African music with extended
passages from various works by Johann Sebastian Bach. Lambarena marks
the third work by Caniparoli to enter Boston Ballet's repertory,
following the highly successful Lady of the Camellias, and the world
premiere of Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, both in 2004.
It is the 1993 recording of Lambarena, which is a combination of
Johann Sebastian Bach and traditional African songs as arranged by
Pierre Akendengue and Hughes de Coursonand. Both Akendengue and
Coursonand are credited on the cast sheet and in the program.
When he choreographed the piece for San Francisco Ballet in 1995,
Caniparoli invited the West African dance teachers Zakariya Sao Diouf
and Naomi Washington Diouf to work with him as consultants. In October
the Dioufs spent a week in Boston, training the Company in African
dance and doing outreach programs with students.
