1. Konono No 1 – Performance
Konono No 1 (http://konono.calabashmusic.com/) from the Congo will be
giving their Boston debut this Friday.
Thrillingly unique, Konono N°1 has taken Congalese Bazombo trance music
and given it a gloriously frantic sound. The 25-year-old band plays
three electric likembés (thumb pianos) equipped with handmade
microphones fashioned from salvaged car parts. Add a rhythm section that
uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car
parts), three singers and three dancers, and you’ve got "amped-up,
distorted call-and-response chants with dizzying plinking patterns that
just grow fiercer and more jubilant as they stretch out.”
